Four official Army museums are located at Fort Jackson, just outside Columbia, South Carolina. The museums are open to the public and receive approximately 25,000 visitors each year. Admission and parking are free. Visitors to Fort Jackson must have a photo ID and a valid car registration. They may enter the base at Gate 1 or Gate 2.
The largest of the museums is the US Army Basic Combat Training Museum, which chronicles how US Army Basic Combat Training has developed since 1917. The museum collects, preserves, and documents historical artifacts related to training, and displays them in several galleries. Visitors will see exhibits dedicated to Recruitment, Reception, Barracks Life, Physical Training, Graduation, Advanced Individual Training, and Heroes Among Us. Although the museum follows the schedule of basic combat training today, visitors will see the similarities and differences of training programs during WWI, WWII, the Cold War, and the War on Terror. There are also displays tracing the history of Fort Jackson. The museum recently went through a two year renovation and reopened with new exhibits in 2011. The US Army Basic Combat Training Museum is located in Building 4442 on Jackson Blvd. Regular hours are Monday-Friday from 9am-4pm. On Family Days the museum has extended hours from 9am-6pm to accommodate visiting family members. The museum is closed on Federal holidays.
The US Army Chaplaincy Museum is located at 10100 Lee Rd, on the lower level of the Chaplain Center and School. The museum preserves and displays artifacts and mementos related to the history of the Army Chaplains and Chaplain Assistants. Exhibits trace the history from the commissioning of the first US Army Chaplain in 1791 to the present day. Displays detail the commissioning of the first Catholic, Jewish, and African American Chaplains. The museum is open Monday-Friday from 9am-4pm.
The US Army Adjutant General Corps Museum is located at 4392 Magruder Ave. The museum traces the history of one of the Army's oldest branches. A key mission of this branch includes postal operations. Many prominent officers have served as Adjutants General, and a number of them are profiled in the museum. There are also exhibits related to Army Special Service units, including Army bands. The museum has an extensive collection of typewriters on display.
The US Army Finance Corps Museum is located adjacent to the US Army Adjutant General Corps Museum. This museum tells the history of the Army Finance Corps through its collection of military pay certificates, military currency, and charts listing soldiers' pay throughout US history. Both the Finance Corps Museum and the Adjutant General Corps Museum are open Tuesday-Friday from 10am-4pm.
