Are you looking forward to visit the wonderful Asia during the next vacation? Well, the first choice in most of the wish lists of Asian tourists today is Baguio City in the Philippines. This remarkable city was the only Filipino destination which was honoured by the 2011 TripAdvisor Traveler's Choice Destinations Awards. At the same time, Baguio's marvels have placed it among the top 25 Asian tourist destinations. Most of the modern tourist agencies have enhanced their tour plans to Baguio to cope with the increasing demand for such tours, especially during the Holy Week and in the month of February.
Baguio in a Nutshell
The City of Baguio lies in northern Luzon Island, within the administrative region of Cordillera. It doesn't boast a long history since it didn't exist before 1900 when the American colonial rulers decided to establish a new city at the place where the ancient Ibalois village named Kafagway was situated. Daniel Burnham, the famous American architect, was involved in the design of the city within the highlands in the Cordillera Central mountain range. Originating as a small but systematic town, the City of Baguio succeeded in reaching the zenith as the second main hub of economy, education, culture, and above all tourism, in the Philippines.
Natural Beauty
Its high elevation yielding mild climate has given the nickname "Summer Capital of the Philippines" to the City of Baguio, chiefly because its temperature is significantly lower than other parts of the country. Mossy plants and orchids are among the most significant types of vegetation in the area which is part of the Luzon tropical pine forests eco-region. Despite being a highly urbanised city with over 300,000 residents, Baguio is not short of sights offering beautiful scenery like Governor Park Road, Burnham Park and Kennon Road Zigzag View. Served by the Loakan Airport and several major roads, Baguio can be reached in a six-hour comfortable drive from Manila.
Local Festivals
If you wish to experience the incredible beauty of Baguio City, February is the ideal month. Two of the most famous local festivals attract thousands of tourists to the city during this time. The Panagbenga or Flower Festival is perhaps the most admirable of them. It is held as a tribute to the city's flowers, with floats decorated with exquisite flowers and street dancing involving magnificent flower-inspired costumes. The Chinese New Year celebration is the other major attraction which is held for more than two weeks based on the end of the winter season.
